CANORA - Robert Miller and his wife Tina Cobos have discovered they enjoy travelling, and have spent a number of years on the road across Canada and around the world. They stopped in at the Canora Campground for the night of June 19/20, and then made their way east.
“We began this trip about seven years ago in Vancouver to St. Paul in Alberta,” said Miller. “Then about five years ago continued from St. Paul to Regina. This time we began in Regina on June 15. We are headed to Winnipeg. The trip has been on the Trans Canada Trail."
The couple likes to cross or circumnavigate countries on bike or on foot, including: Cuba, Rwanda, Taiwan, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany (along the old east/west border), Costa Rica, New Zealand, the U.S. continental divide, Netherlands, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, and more.
Upon arriving in Canora, Miller reported, “The trip has been going well; warm at the start, cold and rainy now.
“Highlights have been the people, Dukhobor sites, open spaces and grain elevators.
“When we first started we both dragged BOB (Beast of Burden) trailers behind our pedal bikes and camped out,” continued Miller. “Now I’m 76 and Tina is 66, so we ride with van support, each alternating riding/biking.
“The fun is in riding, camping out and meeting wonderful, friendly Canadians who will find any excuse to talk.
“The Canora campground was the best!”
Miller is a Cuban refugee, having escaped with family to Mexico and then the U.S. in 1960.
He has written about their travels in Mae West Was Right: Mountain Biking the Hidden Contours of the World (available on Amazon).
