Every time a player heads to one of the disc golf courses in the Parkland Association of Disc Golf they hold out the hope they will throw a course record round.
Setting records are of course rare, and deserve to be recognized.
And, starting this September they will be thanks new a partnership between the PADG and Browns Socialhouse in Yorkton.
The Browns Socialhouse Record Setter Awards will have players setting records, according to established criteria, receiving a certificate, and a $25 voucher which means a great meal to celebrate the record.
“When we contacted Browns they were quick to jump on board to help the PADG congratulate record setting disc golfers,” said Calvin Daniels, interim chair of the regional sport association. “There’s really no better way to celebrate having an outstanding round than with a great meal which is exactly what players will have using the voucher at Browns.”
Browns which is a great place to watch any big game enjoy some food and drinks within a social atmosphere, saw the partnership as a great way to reward some hard work and dedication.
“Check out disc golf online and you find out pretty quickly the sport is growing steadily,” said Sabrina Davis, the general manger of Browns Socialhouse Yorkton. “Through the record setter program we can support that growth regionally, and forge a strong partnership which brings disc golfers to Browns. It was an opportunity we saw a positive for both sides.
Daniels said he certainly encourages disc golfers to check out Browns.
“We appreciate all our partners, and encourage disc golfers to support them in return. Just make sure to tell them ‘thanks from a disc golfer,” he said.

Membership rewards partner
Cab Clothing in Yorkton has announced it will be a new partner with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf.
The Yorkton business, which is one of local sources of golf discs, will now offer PADG members a 10 per cent discount on all (regular priced merchandise) throughout the year of the membership.
“Cab Clothing is a locally owned business and we are excited to be partnering with the PADG,” said store co-owner Aaron Kienle. “In the case of disc golf I play myself, and love the game, so I appreciate all the work the Association is doing in the region.
“It’s a great course at Patrick Park in Yorkton. I spend a lot of time in the summer at Sandy Beach on Good Spirit Lake, and enjoy that course. The PADG is doing a lot of work developing courses and attracting players around the region, and I just want to do my part.”
Calvin Daniels, interim chair of the PADG said it’s great to have such a well-known business coming aboard as a partner.
“We have been looking at building a ‘Members Rewards’ program as a way to say thanks to our members and build support, and having Cab Clothing step forward as our first partner for the program is great,” he said.
“Cab handles a great line of golf discs, not to mention all their other great products, so a discount for members is definitely something a disc golfer can use.”
Daniels said the Members Rewards Program is just one of the new developments being undertaken by the PADG as we build programming in support of the 19 courses under its umbrella, and a growing number of members across the region.
Sandy Beach event
It was sunny, hot and calm, in other words a near perfect day for the Second Annual Sandy Beach Disc Golf Tournament.
“If we had put in an order for the weather it couldn’t have been better,” said resort operator Kelly Butz. “We’ve been very fortunate last year, and again this summer.”
Thanks to the weather the 36 disc golfers enjoyed to excellent rounds of disc golf.
“It was great to see the good turnout. We had been shooting for 40, and next year we’ll hit it,” said Butz.
The field of golfers also included a dozen ladies.
“You often read online that it’s a challenge to get women involved in tournaments, so we’re very happy that a full one-third of the field were gals,” said Butz.
Debbie Hupka-Butz of Earl Grey, SK would earn the prize for closest to the pin on #1, while Sarah Gottselig of Regina had the longest drive which was marked out on #8.
The men’s side of things showed that disc golf is a sport for all ages.
Dale Wall of Saskatoon participated in his first disc golf tournament at the age of 70.
At the other end of the spectrum was 10-year-old Owen Istace of Weyburn, the youngest golfer in the field.
“That just shows that disc golf in pretty well accessible for all ages,” said Butz.” It’s one of the reason we installed a course. It really is an all-age activity.”
On the men’s side; Mark Kienle of Wadena would earn the prize for closest to the pin on #1, while Jeremy Taylor of Saskatoon had the longest drive which was marked out on #8.
Butz said he has to thank the resort’s Cabin Owners Association who helped make the event a success.
“You can’t run a tournament alone. You have to have help collecting prizes, preparing the course, flipping hamburgers, and this year we had a good crew helping out,” he said.
Butz said as soon as they get caught up after the July 30 event, and get in a few rounds themselves just for fun, they start planning their Third Annual Tournament for July 2017.
