It has become an annual event for the Rama Senior Citizens to host the Canada Day Celebration on July 1, which this year highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

The opening ceremony took place with many gathered by the village office as Councillor Phillip Shewchuk raised the flag with some help from his four year- old granddaughter, Lillith.

Following the singing of O Canada, all proceeded to St. Anthony’s Parish Hall. Mary Kowalyshyn, the emcee, welcomed all in both French and English. A moment of silence took place to remember the passing of long-time club member, Alec Dutchak.

The 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag was acknowledged in both official languages. Mayor Darrell Dutchak expressed appreciation to the Rama Senior Citizens Club (also known as the Rama Golden Jets) on taking the initiative to host the annual Canada Day celebration. He spoke of the great country Canada is as Canadians show much  respect for their flag unlikesome other countries
which burn their flags due to the conflicts that arise. He emphasized how fortunate Canadians are to be living in this great country.

Stella Grona and Helen Fulawka, long-time dedicated members of the club, had the honour of the official cutting of the Canada Day cakes. Leonard Pasloski said grace and all enjoyed the barbecue luncheon! Entertainment followed with recording artists The Mosaics from Winnipeg.

Everyone enjoyed their singing and dance music. Mary Kowalyshyn acknowledged and thanked all the sponsors as well as the team club members who helped with the preparation for this special event. Much appreciation was expressed to Canada Heritage for the funding as well as the many other sponsors who made the Canada Celebration a great success! Many lucky winners left with the numerous prizes. A fantastic display of fireworks completed the day!
