YORKTON - Are you 55 years or older?

Need to get some activity in your day?

Well, the City of Yorkton trained volunteers this month to learn how to facilitate exercises for older people.

The Forever in Motion program, sponsored by Sask. Parks and Recreation (SPRA) and the city, provided the training for those 55 years and older.
"We know that being active is so important for the older adult," states Jan Cochrane RN, trainer for the project in a release. “Not only by keeping moving maintains your strength and flexibility, but it also helps to prevent falls, one of the leading causes of hospitalizations in this age group.

There are many other positive reasons, which includes: sleeping and breathing better, less joint and muscle pain, plus the opportunity to get out the door. "
Older adults make up 33 per cent of the city’s population.

“This project is a definite asset to our community,” added Jessica Resler, Yorkton Recreation Service Manager.

The exercise program is geared to both lower impact and cardio with a combination of strength, flexibility, balance through range of motion techniques.

The participant can go at their own pace and even stay in their chair.

The plan is to offer the events in the areas where seniors live with the graduates from the training assisting.
