YORKTON - Movember has been designated as the month that men are encouraged to put down the razor and let the moustache grow and the beard fill in, all for a good cause.

The adoption of a healthier lifestyle is the goal of the Urban Poling Group in Yorkton.

“We know that just the simple action of walking, can benefit anyone,” said Anne Stupak, Certified Urban Poling Instructor.

As a result urban poling instructors Anne Stupak and Karen Ransome have issued a challenge to its pole walkers and to anyone that wishes to participate. 

“We have taken the Movember name and given it a twist to "MOVE"mber,” said Stupak.

“Our challenge is to have the 30 days of November be a month of movement.

“The challenge is not only for our male walkers but also for our female walkers, to get up and keep moving throughout the cooler days.

“We also hope that by creating this challenge during this month that it will give the opportunity to have the discussion about the health issues of men and support the Movember Foundation.

“The challenge has no other motives but to bring attention to the lifestyles that we adopt and the healthy choices we make on a daily basis.

“The 30 Day ‘MOVE’mber Challenge we hope will create the right choice of a healthy active lifestyle.”

Canada's Movember was established in 2007 aimed on raising awareness of Men's health issues, such as prostrate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide.

‘Change the face of men's health’ is the goal of Movember.

The organization is focused on raising funds to increase awareness for early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatment to reduce the number of preventable deaths.

The growth of the moustache or beard is an outward sign to remind men to have an annual check-up, research family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. 

Walking with poles just makes the time out walking that much more beneficial. Normal walking without poles uses only 50 per cent of your body’s muscles whereas with poles you are using 90 per cent of your whole body. Activating from the shoulders right down to your feet. The poles help to stabilize and balance individuals as they walk, reducing the chance of falling. The posture improves and breathing becomes easier. Walking is the number one exercise recommended by medical practitioners and studies show that walking improves mood, strengthens and tones and the improvement of overall mental and physical well being.
