Funds raised at Kamsack’s Canada Day barbecue will be earmarked for wildfire relief in Saskatchewan through the Canadian Red Cross.

KAMSACK — In addition to a parade and fireworks, Canada Day in Kamsack will also be a fundraiser for those who fight forest fires and for the people most affected by them.

Town council sent a letter to various groups and organizations on June 3 seeking assistance for the Canada Day festivities.

“Council wants Canada Day to be a successful event and we are calling on our dedicated volunteers, community organizations, businesses and citizens in the area to help us make that happen,” said the letter signed by Mayor Beth Dix.

“We are hosting a barbecue on this day to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross to aid in fighting the forest fires and to help those displaced by them,” the letter said. “The federal and provincial governments have pledged to match your donations.

“There is a plan to have a parade and the fireworks have been purchased,” it said. “Please consider entering a float in the parade. It doesn’t have to be a traditional float; show off your custom car, motorcycle, bicycle or tractor. Dress in a uniform or a costume, wave the flag, or do anything to show your Canadian pride.”

The Kamsack Swimming Pool will offer free swimming on Canada Day, Dix said.

Persons or groups interested in hosting an event such as a ball tournament, car show, kids’ event, or “if you have another great idea, please let us know by calling the town office.

“We look forward to working with you on a great Canada Day.”
