SaskTel would like to remind customers that mandatory 10 digit dialing for local calls is less than one month away. Beginning May 11, the area code plus the 7-digit local number must be dialed to complete a local call in Saskatchewan. Since February 25, SaskTel customers have been hearing a network message reminding them to dial 10 digits with the call automatically completed if only 7-digits are dialed. However beginning May 11, anyone who fails to include the area code when making a local call will receive a network message asking them to hang up and redial using the area code; the call will no longer be automatically completed.

While approximately 85% of callers are now dialing 10-digits for local calls, SaskTel wants to ensure all customers are ready for the mandatory date. SaskTel reminds customers:

that when call forwarding to another telephone number such as a cell phone or businesses who call forward to an auto attendant service, to include the area code in the forwarded number.

to update programmed numbers in their communications equipment to include the area code, such as: home phones, cell phones, fax machines, modems, equipment for the hearing impaired, home security systems or door entry systems that use the tenants phone number for access.

when sending text messages, use 10 digits.

to include an area code in all instances where they need to provide a contact number such as: cheques, medical forms, stationary, business cards, insurance forms, etc.

The following numbers will not be impacted or change:

current phone numbers and calling areas

long distance calling (1+area code +phone number)

Special 3-digit numbers such as 911, 811, 611, 411 and 310 numbers.
