Shelves today are overstocked with different types of cleaning products. There are products specifically made to clean your carpet, your hard-wood, your fabrics and your clothes. We have become accustomed to using specific products for certain jobs. Randy and Eva Crouse, of Crouse-Bacher Enterprises (CBE), challenge this consumerist thinking with their all natural product. Once demonstrated for the critical eyes of locals, their BEST Surface Cleaner became an instant hit.

Randy and Eva Crouse weren’t always in the cleaning business. A simple couple from Manitoba, they worked to feed their family much like the rest of us does. However, life became difficult when their son started having problems with allergies. Randy Crouse then began work as a household chemist, researching the ingredients and chemicals that went into their household products. He found that most environmental cleaning agents are to blame, as they are filled with numerous chemicals that may smell fresh, but are actually irritants to the lungs. The Crouses realized that they were not the only family dealing with the same problem. In fact, a study commissioned by Johnson & Johnson suggests that 10 million Canadians suffer from environmental allergies. Armed with knowledge, the couple journeyed out into the world of organics.

It wasn’t until they came across Seeder soft soap that their BEST Surface Cleaner was born. It made cleaning dried grease look like a simple water stain; effortless to wipe away. Combining this base with enzymes, glycerin and salt proved to be a winning combination. The cleaner is able to erase the damage done to fabric, carpet, upholstery, glass, tires, chrome, siding and leather. It can also be used as a detergent booster by adding water.

The Crouses only have a couple of other cleaning products due to the coverage of their best seller. The first is White ‘N Brite, a hard surface cleaner born from the discovery of the cleaning abilities of Rhubarb acid. It is able to dissolve through lime, calcium and rust. The last is Clearview, a glass and plastic cleaner. A canola-coconut soap is the base, and with glycerin, it leaves its own light film on that acts as a de-fogger.

Crouse-Bacher Enterprises hand-make and hand-pack their own products. Their ingredients are gathered close to home, often within two provinces. Over the past twelve years, CBE has attained many customers, and many repeat customers. Among them are satisfied allergy sufferers, young families, hotels and professional janitorial services.

“We were actually approached by Wal-Mart for our Clearview cleaner to be sold in the vision care centres, but I’m not a fan of the big multi-stores,” Eva Crouse remarked.

It is the will of this couple’s company to remain the same for the needs of their customers. It is their wish to remain as close to the customer as possible.

This is achieved by continuing to create the product by their own hands, and selling it through their own networks. Though they are a company, they are consumers too.
