Abduction case headed to trial

Yorkton's Melvin Dale Koroluk will stand trial for the alleged abduction of a child from the Yorkton Exhibition last July.

Yorkton's Melvin Dale Koroluk will stand trial for the alleged abduction of a child from the Yorkton Exhibition last July.

The 10-year-old victim in the case was called as the sole witness at a preliminary hearing on January 31 at Yorkton Provincial Court. The girl, who cannot be identified, told the court of how she was lured into a car by an older male at the exhibition on July 6, 2011 and driven outside the city. According to the girl, she escaped when the man stopped the car on a grid road.

After hearing her testimony, Provincial Court Judge James Benison said he was satisfied that sufficient evidence exists to take the case to trial. Koroluk will be tried for kidnapping and assault at the next sitting of the Yorkton Court of Queen's Bench. An exact date for the trial was not set.

A separate hearing for an unrelated firearms charge against Koroluk was adjourned until March 5.
