Cathy Michaluk's son, Vince, 28, was diagnosed high-functioning Asperger syndrome and has received support through various organizations over the years. Although grateful for that, she has identified a need in the community for services specifically geared toward adults with Asperger syndrome. An initial meeting to launch the support group is being held Wednesday July 10 in the main boardroom at Yorkton Regional Hospital and anyone interested is invited to attend.
"People with Asperger syndrome are very intelligent but don't know how to present themselves," she explains. "Vince avoids making eye contact and also stutters. He is highly intellectually developed and capable, but also socially awkward," she adds.
"Supports that are in place throughout the province are for all disabilities or are specific to children. I want to really target support and resources specifically for adults with Asperger syndrome," she says.
She aims to build a centre that would provide resources and advocacy for adults diagnosed with high-functioning Asperger syndrome. Social activities and workshops geared to developing social skills are also in the plans.
