A new group made a presentation to Council Monday looking for Council’s support through a resolution.
The Age Friendly group is new to Yorkton, but has been around globally for some time, explained co-project coordinator Twila Seeley.
This initiative began on a global level with the World Health Organization. Many Canadian locations are involved with this initiative including 100 communities in Manitoba – which is a national leader for this project, she told Council.
Closer to home, the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism was a leader in promoting Age Friendly in the province.
“Through developed partnerships in Yorkton, the Seniors Mechanism facilitated a community-wide meeting here,” said Seeley, adding a broad spectrum of community organizations was represented.
Seeley said background work has already begun.
“We have looked at the City’s official community plan and believe our project meets the eight major domains we intend to address,” she said.
These domains are; outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services
Seeley said the visit to Council was “to introduce ourselves and our initiative and open the doors of communication with the City of Yorkton.
“We do not require money or resources at this time.”
Seeley said more work lies ahead.
“The next step will be to conduct a needs assessment and from that, create action plans in the eight domains,” she said.
