Shelter allowances paid through the Saskatchewan Assistance Program (SAP), Transitional Employment Allowance (TEA) and Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement (SRHS) will increase October 1.
Shelter increases for SAP and TEA will range from $5 to $23 per month. About 4,600 SAP clients and 950 TEA clients will receive an increase. Shelter increases for the SRHS will range from $2 to $10 per month.
More than 5,100 families who qualify for the SRHS will receive an increase. Not all SAP, TEA and SRHS clients will receive an increase; however, no client will receive less than they did prior to the rate changes.
"These latest increases to the shelter allowances for SAP, TEA and the SRHS - the seventh round of increases over the past three years - reflect our government's resolve to ensure that our province's most vulnerable families and individuals receive the assistance that they need," Social Services Minister June Draude said.
The shelter allowance increases are based on community of residence and family composition and reflect changes to average market rents in Saskatchewan (as tracked by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation) between October 2010 and April 2011.
