The official kick-off for the 2014 East Seals Snowarama in Yorkton was held recently.
The 38th annual event raises funds to help youth attend Camp Easter Seal each summer, youth like 2014 event ambassador Brooke Perepeluk.
Being involved with Snowarama is a good thing, said Brooke's mother Gwen.
"I think it's fantastic for Brooke," she said, adding such involvement helps others and doesn't look bad on her daughter's resume either.
"It's a good experience," she added, noting it's something the whole family is getting involved in.
Often brother Reid, through his involvement in hockey, gets a lot of attention. Being Snowarama ambassador puts Brooke at the forefront, said Gwen.
Brooke said she has ridden on a snowmobile before, and while not making the entire trek in February, has every intention of taking in part of the ride.
Brooke and her brother Reid are also going to actively be collecting pledges for the ride.
Brooke, who is a Grade 6 student at St. Paul's School in the city, is setting up a Facebook page to help attract pledges, and Reid is going to be looking to the hockey fraternity for support.
"It's a good cause," he said.
"Some kids don't really do a lot if they have disabilities," continued Reid, adding Camp Easter Seal provides a safe environment to do new things.
Asked how Brooke became involved, her mother explained the process.
"She was asked if she was interested in being the ambassador because she's been to Camp Easter Seal twice," said Gwen.
Brooke said attending the camp is "fun", with the week spent at the facility at Lake Manitou a highlight of the summer for her.
Gwen said the camp allows her daughter to do things she wouldn't otherwise have access too.
"It's fantastic," she said, adding her daughter is "very independent," which means she "likes to do everything on her own.
"There she can."
Gwen admitted both she and her daughter were not exactly sure what to expect from the camp. She said Gwen was a bit shy the first year, then added to her daughter "I worry about you."
But any apprehension disappeared once at the camp.
"This year she was packed two weeks before hand," said Gwen.
