Antiques on the beach at Cruise the Spirit

Every summer, hundreds of classic car enthusiasts come to Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park for one of the most unique car shows in the province.

This weekend was the 10th anniversary of the Cruise the Spirit Car Show organized by the Yorkton Antique Automobile Association.

"Good Spirit Lake and old cars-you can't get any better than that in the summer in Saskatchewan," said association president Jim Davies.

More than 140 cars were registered for the show this year-one of the better turnouts for the event, but not its best-from across the province and as far away as Ontario.

Participants could spend the entire weekend at the lake in a complementary group camping site or just stop by for the afternoon show and shine at the beach on Saturday and Sunday. Draws and door prizes were awarded randomly to entrants: enough that most attendees walked away with at least one prize.

"It's a beautiful outdoor event, but not a judged event," said Davies. "Nobody is underneath these cars with a Q-tip making them look special. You come and you park your car, you go visit, you have some ice cream and you go to the beach and have fun."

The lakeside setting helps makes the show about more than just cars. Children and family members have all the amenities of the park in front of them, while car owners wander around the lot and socialize in a more casual setting than most car shows.

"It's really neat, and some really great friendships are formed," said Davies.
