On a good day, it's difficult to find a hotel room in Yorkton and the boomtowns of the surrounding region. Most inns are operating at or near capacity thanks to the thriving construction, mining, and tourism industries. To meet the demand for accommodations, numerous hotels will soon be springing up in Yorkton, Melville, and Esterhazy.
With those new hotels come new jobs - and a new program at Parkland College. In March, Parkland College will introduce apprenticeship training in the hospitality and tourism fields. The program is a partnership with Canada-Saskatchewan Employment Centre.
The course is scheduled to run from March 5 to Sept. 7, 2012 in Yorkton. Students will receive training that can lead to careers as front desk agents, reservation sales agents, and housekeeping room attendants. Successful students will obtain certification in those positions through the Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council. They'll also be able to achieve journeyperson status as a Guest Services Representative through the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.
Information sessions are scheduled for later this month at four Parkland College campuses. Meetings will be held Jan. 24 in Melville, Jan. 25 in Kamsack, Jan. 26 in Esterhazy, and Jan. 27 in Yorkton. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. with interviews to follow in the afternoon.
