A three-day crime wave during the weekend of May 25 came to an end with four arrests May 28. Three male youths and Valmore Howard, a 25-year-old Yorkton man, face numerous charges of break and enter, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 related to 28 complaints RCMP received that weekend.
The day before charges were laid in this case, Howard was in court where he pleaded guilty to theft of a laptop from Holly's Night Club on May 3. Crown and defence presented a joint submission for 90 days incarceration.
The defence acknowledged the sentence was on the low end considering Howard's prior record of six convictions for theft, but argued the crime-spree was alcohol-related. He said the young man had been clean for nearly four years-his last sentence being in 2009-until his relationship with his girlfriend ended in March and he started drinking again.
Defence requested that the latter part of the sentence be served in the province's Impaired Driver Treatment Program.
Judge Patrick Koskie accepted the joint submission and made the order for the alcohol treatment program.
In Yorkton court June 3, Howard appeared by video from Regina Correctional Centre on 19 charges including six for theft, five for break and enter and five for mischief.
The Crown elected to proceed by way of indictment, meaning, if convicted, Howard will face much greater sanctions than previously.
The case was adjourned until June 17.
One of the youths also appeared June 3.
The other two youths were released May 28 with a promise to appear in court June 24.
