Author Janet Love Morrison will be giving a reading from her new book Friends: 6 Women 6 Cultures, One Humanity in Yorkton this Friday.
Love Morrison who was born in Toronto, raised in Port Coquitlam, BC, and now lives in Vancouver, said the novel, her first looks at how cultures all contribute to humanity.
"My intent is to honour multicultural friendships and support my belief that when we all rise to be the best we can be as individuals, humanity will rise to be the best it can be," she said.
The inspiration for the novel came for the author's own experiences.
"I spent 14 years outside of Canada and I'm sharing what I learnt," said Love Morrison.
The interest in writing is one Love Morrison said she has long had.
"I've always loved to write, I co-wrote my first book in 1995," she said, noting " I first started freelancing in 1994."
As a result Love Morrison said the book came together rather smoothly.
"I love to research and write, nothing was difficult, writing is a joy," she said. " The first draft took about six months
"I'm very disciplined when I'm working on a manuscript. I virtually write every day."
That said Love Morrison said start-to-finish the book took about three years.
"Love Morrison's new book is to honour and celebrate Canada's diversity. Six women from profoundly different cultures and belief systems meet weekly at a hair salon and discuss their life's challenges such as: love, success, addiction, depression, family violence, forgiveness, courage, compassion, leadership, and more. In time they recognize their possibilities and discover that rising to be the best one can be as a human supersedes all their differences," detailed information offered by the 50-year-old author.
The book was released in November 2012.
Love Morrison also has a second project nearing the presses.
"I have a children's book, Radar the Rescue Dog, with a foreword by Justin Trudeau, that will be released this November," she said.
The reading will be held at 5th Avenue Coffee at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
