Battered Women's Awareness Week has been unanimously proclaimed for Dec. 5 to 11 in Yorkton by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

Battered Women's Awareness Week has been unanimously proclaimed for Dec. 5 to 11 in Yorkton by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

In making the request for the designation LaVern Dumka, Director with Shelwin House said the week is one where the community has "time to reflect on violence against woman in our community, across Canada and around the world."

Dumka said the situation is one which touches everyone.
"The reality of violence affects each and every one of us," she said, adding one-in-four Canadian women have experienced abuse at the hands of their partner.

The week is "a means of emphasizing the need for the entire community to work together to eliminate violence," said Dumka.

Michelle Goulden, Outreach Worker with Shelwin House said a Candlelight Vigil will be held Dec. 11, at Sacred Heart High School starting at 2 p.m.

Following the candlelight ceremony there will be three speakers.

"The first is Cathy Kaip; who will speak about her experience as the target of one man's obsession for over 36 years. Her entire adult life has been marred by the physical and mental abuse of stalking. Cathy is at the centre of the recent case in Regina whereby the individual charged with violating a Peace Bond was banished by the judge for one year," said Goulden.

The second speaker, Gail, will speak about Stalking and Harassment after she escaped an abusive relationship.

"Our final speaker will be Sgt. James Morgan from the Yorkton District GIS who will give information about stalking from a police perspective," said Goulden.
