Fall is well on its way and everyone is getting back to their regular schedules. Prevention is an important part of lowering this statistic:
NEVER use a cellular device or any other handheld device while driving.
Keep children in child safety seats.
Always where a seat belt, no matter what distance you are driving.
Break up long trips into segments so that rest breaks are included.
Schedule enough time to get to your destination so that you do not have to rush or drive recklessly to arrive on time.
Unfortunately, not all incidents can be avoided. If you do find yourself in a car accident, or witness one, do you know what to do to help? St. John Ambulance provides tips on how you can help create a less dangerous scene for both yourself and others involved.
Upon arrival, or if you are involved:
1. Take Charge and Recruit Help - Immediately take charge of the situation by recruiting help and calling for emergency services.
2. Personal Safety - Look out for your own personal safety before moving to help others. Make sure the scene is safe for you to enter.
3. Identify Self - Identify yourself to those involved and ask if you can help.
4. Be sure to look for head or spinal injuries before moving anyone or anything.
5. Assess responsiveness of those involved.
6. Send for help and an AED if you have others around. If you are alone, wait for help to arrive.
