Belated back to school for Langenburg

Langenburg High School students are back to school following a week-long suspension of classes due to air quality issues.

Langenburg High School students are back to school following a week-long suspension of classes due to air quality issues.

Dwayne Reeve, Good Spirit School Division director of education, said after classes started September 2, school officials started noticing people having adverse reactions to being in the building.

The air issues were related to poor drainage under part of the building, he said. The division has been mitigating this problem for several years with negative air pressure in the area, but flooding this summer exacerbated the problem.

The administration shut the school down Friday, September 5. Workers isolated the problem part of the building, built some new walls and moved desks and classroom amenities into other areas of the school.

Air quality tests conducted on Thursday indicated there was no ongoing issue. Reeve said, the division will continue to monitor the situation.

Grades 10 to 12 rooms were not affected and those students returned to studies on Monday. Grades 5 to 9 kids were expected to be back in class today.

With a brand new school currently scheduled to open in Langenburg in September 2016, Reeve said it was unfortunate the existing school hold out until then.

"It will be a long two years, but at lease we'll be able to see some positive alongside our troubles," he said. "It makes it easier to stomach."
