When well-known runner, Bernie Wlock, was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, a natural partnership came into place to honour his journey. On Saturday, June 18th, over 100 participants raised more than $8,750 for Local Cancer Initiatives through Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer and The Health Foundation.
Bernie had been an integral part of the early stages of Close Cuts as a participant and he took on an even bigger role as one of the key planners in the Health Foundation’s Charity Road Race.
The money raised came from Bernie’s Journey, a 5km or 10km walk or run where participants collected donations for local cancer initiatives that will enhance the lives of those people from Yorkton and area that are affected by cancer. Following the walk or run, participants were treated to a pancake breakfast generously supported by the Yorkton Co-op, Harvest Meats, Parrish & Heimbecker and Penguin Refrigeration. The general public was also invited to take part in the breakfast, which was prepared by the Yorkton Firefighters, and had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful meal (by donation) towards this cause.
We were excited to have Bernie not only attend the function, but participate, as well.
“Together, we can all work towards the day when cancer is cured or becomes a disease that you can live with, rather than fear dying from.”
