Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area made a request of Yorkton Council Monday.

"Please be advised that the month of September has been declared Big Brothers Big Sisters month nationally. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada annually serves more than 37,000 children and is celebrating 100 years of services in Canada. As in previous years, we are requesting the City of Yorkton declare Sept. 1 to 30, 2013 as Big Brothers Big Sisters month," explained Irma Van De Bon, Executive Director of the Association.

Van De Bon said the organization works to help children.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven to improve children's odds for succeeding in school, behaving non-violently, increased self-esteem/self-worth, healthier lifestyles, evidence of higher incomes, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and breaking other negative cycles," she said.

"We believe that by changing the course of young lives we can in turn be changing the course of a community's future. That it could lead to a reduction in poverty and unemployment, to safer schools and neighbourhoods, and to a renewed optimism for growth. That it could even lead to change on a broader, more far-reaching scale. Whether it's in the form of time or money there is no more important investment we as individuals can make than in helping our community's children realize - and share - their full potential."

In September several activities and events are being planned to celebrate mentoring and expand our mentoring programs.

The highlight will be Sept. 18, said Van De Bon.

"We are holding a Gala Event to celebrate 100 years of mentoring excellence in Yorkton and area and we invite you to join us for an inspirational and fun evening with our Guest of Honour Michael "Pinball" Clemons, Banquet, Volunteer Appreciation Awards and Silent and Live Auction," she said.

In addition, there will be a flag raising ceremony at City Hall on Sept. 10th at 10:00 a.m..
