September has been declared Big Brothers Big Sisters Month in Yorkton following a unanimous decision of Council at its regular meeting Monday.

The designation corresponds with a national designation of the month.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area is a community supported, volunteer based organization committed to the healthy development of children in need and their families through the provision of quality one to one mentoring relationships and other related programs serving children from Yorkton, Melville, Churchbridge, Esterhazy and Langenburg. Presently we serve 250 children annually through various mentoring programs," detailed a letter from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area circulated to Council.

"The month of September will be an opportunity for us to be more visible in our community with additional publicity helping to recruit volunteers to assist us as we try to implement mentoring programs which best suit the needs of the children. We strive to ensure that every child who needs a Mentor has a Mentor. Studies show that mentoring helps kids stay in school, avoid risky behaviour, and experience first-hand the importance of helping others in their community."

"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area is all about friends and making a difference in a child's life. We look forward to talking to you further about mentoring and the difference it makes in not only the child's life but in the community as a whole."
