The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the City of Yorkton, will be hosting a Town Hall meeting to discuss the 2017 Commercial Property Taxes 7:00 PM Wednesday June 28 at the Gallagher Centre.

Upon the recent arrival of the 2017 tax notices, a number of member businesses have expressed to the Chamber their concern about the unprecedented increase in their taxes. In an effort to inform its members and to provide a forum for the City to explain the elements of the tax notices, the Chamber has organized the meeting. The Provincial Government and SAMA will also be speaking at the event.

Mike Popowich, Vice President of the Yorkton Chamber is pleased the Chamber and the City are able to collaborate in this way. “Many businesses have been surprised by the size and severity of the increases on their commercial property taxes,” he said. “We are receiving reports of increases of up to 200%!  By bringing together the City, the Provincial Government and SAMA, our members will gain some insight into how these taxes have been assessed and have the opportunity to ask some questions.”

Mike Stackhouse, Chair of the Chamber’s Policy Committee, urges business people to attend the meeting to learn about how their taxes are determined and to express their concerns.  “The June 28 meeting is another example of the Chamber responding to its members experiencing a difficulty. The Directors have listened and endeavoured to find some solutions,” he said.  “I urge the business community and especially the Chamber members to attend this event.”

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is “the voice of business in Yorkton” and represents over 470 members.
