Catholic High School Band News

At the beginning of May, the SHHS Band went to Winnipeg to hear the Symphony Orchestra's performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The day before, they were allowed to watch the Symphony rehearse, and they spent the morning of the concert working backstage at the Centennial Concert Hall in master classes with some of the Symphony's principal musicians. All enjoyed the evening performance;
it was breathtaking, and will be remembered for years to come. After the performance, the students were allowed to go backstage once again, where they congratulated the musicians from their masterclasses and the conductor, Alexander Mickelthwate, on a job well done.

GSSD Elementary Band Newsletter May 2012

Our students were very busy in March. On March 15 and 16 the Wednesday and Thursday Morning Jazz Bands participated in the Brandon Jazz Festival. The following week the Grade 7 and 8 Bands traveled to Regina to perform at the Optimist Music Festival. The Yorkton Music Festival took place over the last
few days of March and many students took part in solo, small and large ensemble performances.

Emma Teneycke, Madison Leister, Tamara Bartley, Nicole Hedley, Lacey Senchuk, Cassidy Cross, and Meagan Dietrich from our Grade 8 band took part in the South Saskatchewan Junior Honor Band in
March. Mikaila Ortynsky and Paige Shyiak were nominated but were unable to attend. We want to congratulate all of them for being chosen to attend based on their playing ability and their ability to represent our schools well.

On May 4 the Grade 6 Band traveled to Regina to take part in a workshop with Maureen Beisel. This educational experience was in preparation for their upcoming performance at our Spring Concert. The Winston Knoll Area Grade 7 Band from Regina performed concerts at Dr. Brass School and Yorkdale
Central School on May 8.

As well, we were fortunate to have Christina Gerhardt, a music education student from the University of
Saskatchewan, spend the past three weeks student teaching with us.

Thank you

We want to extend our thanks to all of the parents and students. We appreciate the hard work, positive effort, and fun the students have provided for all of us this year. We also appreciate the numerous areas
that our parents have assisted with: chaperoning, driving students to rehearsals, volunteering
with Band Booster fundraising, distributing and maintaining uniforms, encouraging their children to practice, attending concerts, and supporting their child's involvement with music.

Finally, we would like to thank the Band Booster Executive for their continued efforts and support. Your hard work benefits all of our students. Thank you for your time and effort.
