Yorkton Council passed amendments to the City's Municipal Development Plan and its Zoning Bylaw to make way for a major housing development on the old Fairview School property.

The project by Terra Developments Inc., is being called Fifth Avenue Estates. Company spokesperson Doug Rogers explained his firm has "been working hard to bring a housing project to Yorkton with a target price under $200,000."

Rogers said they will achieve their goal by creating the housing by building eight-plex units.

The overall development would encompass 72 homes, in nine buildings, with amenities including garages, and "some kind of playground for the children."

As for how long the development may take to start, and be completed is something "the marketplace will determine," said Rogers.

Initially the plan calls for the building of 16-units, which will proceed "as soon as eight are sold."Rogers said the buildings can go up rather quickly, citing a similar project in Weyburn started in early August, and expected to be completed by December.

"The process moves quick," he said.

In Yorkton Rogers said the site plan is 90 per cent complete, with just "some technical issues and tweaking," remaining to iron out.

Rogers said he hopes the project will proceed soon.

"Hopefully we'll see a building started, if not late this year, then early next year," he said.
