Canola raises funds, conserves wetlands

At first glance, it might seem like Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) and 4-H Saskatchewan wouldn't have a lot in common, but they're growing a canola crop together just outside of Yorkton this summer.

At first glance, it might seem like Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) and 4-H Saskatchewan wouldn't have a lot in common, but they're growing a canola crop together just outside of Yorkton this summer.

The partnership is a natural one according to Trevor Plews, head of conservation programs for DUC in Saskatchewan.

"It's a perfect fit with out efforts to retain and restore conservation habitat," he said. "At the same time, we are working with rural kids who are learning that sustainable crop production and wetland conservation can work hand in hand."

DUC bought the land in 2011 as part of its upland conservation program, but needed to prepare it for seeding to forage cover. Growing canola allowed them to do that while raising money at the same time.

Farming, of course, requires labour and 4-H had the ready-made work force to contribute. FCL worked with local supply partners to provide the seed, fertilizer, crop protection products, fuel and agronomic expertise.

Proceeds from the project, dubbed "Growing the Future," will be split evenly between DUC and 4-H.

"It's definitely a win-win," said Lee Walerius, 4-H executive director. "As a fundraiser, this program is very important and it will help our organization develop new programs for our youth."

Vic Huard, vice president of corporate affairs for FCL said the goals of the project dovetail nice with his organization's philosophy of sustainable environmental practices.

Walerius expects the crop will be harvested during a field day around the middle of September when 4-H members will help swath the crop and learn about GPS systems.
