Forty Grade 9 students gained a better understanding of the mining industry, a greater appreciation of their parents, and insight into career possibilities for themselves, all in one day during the Mosaic Esterhazy Take-Our-Kids-to-Work tour of the K2 potash mine site on November 2.

Take our Kids to Work is a national program sponsored annually by The Learning Partnership and is designed to give Grade 9 students unique learning experiences by inviting them to go to work with their parents for a day.

At Mosaic Esterhazy K2 mine site, 40 students from eight area secondary schools donned the full personal protection clothing of a miner - boots, hard hat, lamp, high visibility vests, and safety glasses - and they followed in their parents footsteps for a day. They toured underground and through the mill and were given a hands-on experience in the lab. At each turn, the students met with Mosaic employees of a various trades - boiler operators, lab technicians, mining machine operators, mill operators, engineers, welders, industrial mechanics - all of whom took time to describe what their educational background was and what their jobs entailed.

Mosaic Recruiter Cathy Sweet describes the Take Our Kids to Work program as "a great opportunity for Grade 9 students to really see what the Mosaic facilities are like to work at and what jobs are required to run the plants... from tradespeople to operators, engineers, and professionals."

Sweet encouraged the students to talk about their day on site with their parents at the dinner table and to consider the many career options in the mining industry.
