Christ the Teacher Catholic Schools has promoted one of its own to replace outgoing director of education Darrell Zaba.

Barb MacKesey, currently a superintendent of education with the separate division, will assume the administration’s top job as of August.

Zaba announced his retirement from the position he has held for the past five years before Christmas saying he has been in education for 35 years (17 with local Catholic boards) and it is time to spend more time with his family.

MacKesey has spent most of her career with Christ the Teacher and its predecessors starting out as a teacher and progressing through vice-principal, principal and assistant director to superintendent.

“In making the appointment, the Board recognized Mrs. MacKesey’s outstanding leadership capacity, her commitment to servant leadership and her faith-filled witness of our Catholic teachings,” a press release stated. “Throughout her career, Barb has consistently treated others with compassion and her actions are always aligned with her words.”

Although there were only three applications, Lisa Rathgeber, board chair, said the decision came down to the interview.

“Even though we know Barb, to be honest, she blew us away,” Rathgeber said.
