There was a time when it was not entirely uncommon to see cattle on the streets of Yorkton, but residents of the city were surprised on February 3 to see just that in 2015.

Five animals got loose from a Manitoba farmer’s trailer headed for Heartland Livestock Services. The RCMP received multiple reports of cows wandering around the downtown core. Members were able to corral two of them at the old Pepsi bottling plant where they were reloaded onto the farmer’s trailer.

Three others proved to be uncontrollable, said Cpl Tim Schwartz, and had to be shot.

Police dispatched the animals with shotguns, one just east of the New Holland dealership, one south of the new Parkland College Trades and Technology Centre and one out near the Western Development Museum.

These were also returned to the farmer for disposal.

Schwartz said the RCMP hates to have to kill livestock, but the cattle had become a danger to the public.
