Yorkton Council unanimously approved the lone tender received to crush reclaimed concrete and asphalt accumulated in the city over the past six years.
The City of Yorkton had accumulated 25,000 cubic metres of the material with "the intent of recycling the material into a useable product by means of mechanical crushing. This practice also reduces the volume of rubble disposed at the landfill," explained Trent Mandzuk, Director of Public Works with the City.
To recover some of the costs associated with the crushing process, the City charges disposal fees for all private concrete debris disposals, he said, adding the fees have accumulated $100,000 in a special account to put toward crushing.
"One bid was received from Geransky's Crushing Ltd. located in Hague, Saskatchewan. Their bid price was $15/tonne for an estimated total of $472,500 (including GST) for the project," said Mandzuk.
The remainder of the project cost would initially be charged to inventory and then recovered when billed out as the material is used.
The crushed material produced can be used for future construction projects, typically as a source of sub base and base material in roadway construction.
"It's an alternative to replacing gravel purchases we do every year," he said.
