Yorkton Council unanimously supported a request to designate Sept. 14 as Canadian Federation of University Women's Day in Yorkton.

Yorkton Council unanimously supported a request to designate Sept. 14 as Canadian Federation of University Women's Day in Yorkton.

"The Canadian Federation of University Women, (CFUW) Yorkton Club is an organization of women university graduates in the Yorkton area. For over five decades we have actively participated in public affairs through education, advocacy, and action," explained Yorkton CFUW president Elsie Stechyshyn at the regular meeting of Council Monday.

Stechyshyn noted the government of Saskatchewan will be proclaiming September 14, 2011, as Canadian Federation of University Women's Day.

Historically, the Canadian Federation of University Women, Yorkton Club, was founded in 1954:
*Enabling the establishment of the Parkland Regional Library.

*The promoting of kindergarten in schools.

*Helping in the preparation of a survey and lobbying for a recycling program in Yorkton (national recognition was received for our efforts).

*Preparing a resolution on the Sustainability of Grain Production.

In addition Stechyshyn said donations from the club have gone to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre's Intensive Care Unit, the Yorkton Regional High School's marching band, and Shelwin House.
To mark the day, on September 14, 2011 the Canadian Federation of University Women, Yorkton, will host a reception at St. Mary's Parish Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre, 240 Wellington, Yorkton at 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.. CFUW Day will serve as an ideal opportunity to help raise awareness of the organization and its commitments.
