It is safe to say that without their employees, Yorkton businesses would be unable to do anything at all. As a result, it’s important to recognize and encourage the many employees that keep those businesses in business. The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce’s Employee Recognition Event is about rewarding the best employees in town and recognizing their contributions to the local economy.
There were four winners in four categories, an increase from two categories in previous years. The traditional categories were Support and Front Line, won by Lindsay Wolkowski of Budget Blinds of EC Sask and Janet Ostafie of Ramada Yorkton. There were two new categories, Manager – which was won by David Langley of the Yorkton Regional High School – and Spirit – won by Irene Baran of the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
Wolkowski says he’s very honoured to win the award, and it’s a pleasure to take home the award. He says that he’s “very fussy” and as a result that means his work is done to a high standard.
“You try to make the customer happy, that’s the main point because that’s what makes the business stronger.”
Langley is excited to win, and says he was surprised to be nominated, let alone win, especially after meeting the other nominees. He says that it’s his workplace is what set him apart from the crowd, as they’re always busy and meet many people through the events that happen at YRHS.
“We just do lots and lots and my coworkers are great.”
Baran is excited to take home the award, and says it was an honour to be even nominated, let alone win.
“I was shocked and thrilled... Our customers are wonderful, and if they come inside I try to put a smile on their face, I want them to leave happy.”
Ostafie says it’s incredible to be recognized out of a large field of people for her work.
“I love what I do, I give it my all every day, and it’s nice that people recognize that.”
Juanita Polegi, Executive Director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce says it was an outstanding group of nominees overall, with a wide range of people. The goal of the event is to recognize how employees are improving the businesses in Yorkton.
“It was really great to read about how these people contribute to these businesses.”
