After 116 years the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is redefining its boundaries and seeking input from the membership on revising the Chamber's constitution to reflect the change.
The issue was brought to light by a request from Industry Canada, which still had the 1898 description on file as " the Village of Yorkton and the electoral district of Yorkton and Townships 23 to 27 in Range 3 West of the Second Meridian."
Juanita Polegi, executive director of the Chamber said she did not know why the boundaries have never been looked at.
"I have really no idea," she said. "This is the first time anybody has asked us about the Chamber boundaries.
At it's October meeting the Chamber board passed a motion to change the definition to be "the City of Yorkton and the provincial electoral district of Yorkton and Townships 23 to 27 inclusive in Ranges 3 and 4 West of the Second Meridian."
The Chamber's policy committee recommended that the new boundaries should be incorporated into the constitution.
In order to change the constitution the board must provide the entire membership with proposed amendments 30 days prior to a vote of the board, which must pass with a two-thirds majority.
Polegi said it is important to make the change to accommodate future growth of the Chamber.
The issue is up for discussion until November 17. Polegi said those wishing to express an opinion should do so in writing by letter to Box 1051 Yorkton, SK S3N 2X3 or email to [email protected].
The vote is scheduled to take place November 19 at the Chamber office on Highway 9.
