Christ the Teacher Catholic School is in surplus and elementary students are exceeding expectations in reading levels, school trustees heard at their regular board meeting November 24.
Delmar Zwirsky, the division’s chief financial officer told the board the administration posted an operating surplus of $446,347 in 2014-2015.
“The division is currently in a solid financial position and is prepared to meet the upcoming financial challenges required to providing safe and functional facilities and the necessary resources for the upcoming 2015-16 school year and into the future,” Zwirsky said.
The division is also in a solid position with respect to learning outcomes.
In 2014-15, 84.5 per cent of Grades 1 to 4 students were reading at or above grade level.
That puts educators in good stead to meet the division goal for reading that by June 2016, 85 per cent of Grades 1 to 4 students will be reading at or above grade level.
Christ the Teacher uses the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment (F & P) and GB+ Reading Assessment to track student reading achievement.
Shannon Hahn, supervisor of instruction and learning, credited teachers for the good news.
“The division primary literacy team, consisting of eight members from all elementary schools, has been key in supporting the reading outcome in the division strategic plan,” she said.
