City approves SaskTel towers

SaskTel can move forward with the installation of four new cell phone towers in the city following unanimous support for the project by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.


SaskTel can move forward with the installation of four new cell phone towers in the city following unanimous support for the project by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

"Sasktel desires to upgrade its cell phone coverage and system in the province," Josh Mickleborough, Manager of Engineering with the City told Council, adding Yorkton will

receive four additional towers in various locations throughout the community.

The work will include "the installation of two 14.9 m and two 25 m stealth poles. Public information packages were sent to landowners for each of these of towers," said Mickleborough.

Information packages were sent to landowners at all four location from SaskTel.

"SaskTel advised Engineering Services there were no objections or concerns expressed as a result of the circulation process.," said Mickleborough.

In a presentation to Council Doug Grant, Provincial Wireless Manager with SaskTel said the towers were needed to meet growing demand. Unprecedented growth in demand for Wireless service as Smartphones have emerged on the market, he added.

Grant said wireless date growth "continues at a rate of five per cent per week."

In addition, "Ten per cent of households are wireless only," he said, adding "50 per cent of emergency calls to E911 are cellular."
