City Cemetery Bylaw updated

City Council gave unanimous support to all three readings to revisions to Yorkton's Cemetery Bylaw.

City Council gave unanimous support to all three readings to revisions to Yorkton's Cemetery Bylaw.

"Administration has been receiving an increasing amount of requests to install monuments larger than what is currently allowed in the Cemetery Bylaw therefore we've completed a review of the existing Bylaw monument restrictions," explained Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks and Recreation.

The requests led to proposed changes to address monument dimensions and installation requirements, he added.

"Accordingly, various housekeeping changes are also being proposed that do not change the intent or the content of the Bylaw, but better consolidate the Bylaw and improve the flow of information throughout the document," continued McLeod.

In the new bylaw monument regulations "have been revised to update our current monument limitations to maintain industry standards," he said, adding, "In some cases, our current Bylaw required custom ordering of monuments in order to meet our regulations, which increased costs for the public,"

"Also, some plot types did not have monument regulations assigned to them, essentially requiring a special approval process provided in the Bylaw.

"The regulation revisions also considered grounds maintenance to ensure that maintenance standards would be maintained around monuments in a cost neutral manner."
