Janitorial services provided to the City of Yorkton will now be under three-year contracts, saving dollars in some areas, and increasing costs in others.
"As identified within the City of Yorkton's 2020 Strategic Plan, the facilities maintenance division will begin to implement multi-year service contracts for many of the on-going maintenance services required at City buildings. This process will be initiated by employing a single janitorial contract for the majority of our facilities. Larger, multi-year contracts are favoured over annual contracts, as lower unit pricing is typically achieved through larger scale maintenance plans," explained a report circulated to the regular meeting of Council Monday.
However, those cost savings did not materialize in terms of the contract approved covering the majority of City facilities.
The contract was awarded to Geri's Janitorial at a cost of $409,530, the lowest of three tenders received.
"The difference in cost from 2011 to 2012 is $54,180. This difference includes janitorial supplies for all buildings. In 2011, cleaning supplies were purchased by departments on an on-going basis. It is estimated that approximately $9,000 (based on 2010 operating budget figures) was spent by departments providing their own cleaning supplies. The requirement for professional carpet cleaning is also new for 2012. Approximately $10,000 was spent in 2011 in addition to contract prices for this service," outlined the report.
With the janitorial and carpet cleaning costs factored in the contract will cost the City an additional $35,180 per year.
The savings come on a separate contract for janitorial services to the City's Environmental Service Department.
ME Janitorial was awarded the contract for a cost of $41,195, which is $30,892 less than current costs, explained Trent Mandzuk, Director of Public Works with the City.
The net effect of the two contracts is an increase of $4,287.50/year or 3.1 per cent over 2011's costs, he added.
