The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association held its annual convention recently, and four City of Yorkton staff were recognized for their long service.
Every year the SUMA Board of Directors recognizes individuals from across the province who have demonstrated a commitment to outstanding service in the municipal field.
Through the awards program, SUMA acknowledges the contribution of individuals in the field to an improved quality of life in their communities and to the advancement of local government in the province.
Meritorious service awards are granted to municipal staff members with 20 or more years of service. It recognizes their career success, dedication and involvement in their local communities.
Three of the Yorkton recipients were firefighters.
Greg Litvanyi started his career as a firefighter in June of 1990. During this time Litvanyi has risen through the ranks to become Deputy Chief. Litvanyi recently received his Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal. Litvanyi holds many certifications with the Fire Department including his Company Fire Officer Level Two. Litvanyi is currently responsible for the care, maintenance and operational readiness of all of the fire department small engines, which is something that he excels at.
Brian Nielsen started his career as an auxiliary firefighter with the City of Yorkton in 1985. In June of 1990 he accepted a position as a full-time firefighter. Since then Nielsen has risen to the rank of Acting Captain.
Barry Thies is a second-generation firefighter with the City of Yorkton. He has been a dedicated firefighter for the Yorkton Fire Protective Services since he started in July of 1999. He was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain in 2005 and has received his 20-year Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal. Thies is also in charge of all of the department's hose and small engine repairs.
The final recipient was Glenys Roberts.
Roberts started with the City of Yorkton at the RCMP detachment on June 21, 1990 as a detachment clerk steno. For the last two years she has also served on the Occupational Health and Safety Committee for the City of Yorkton.
