The City of Yorkton will proceed with detailed engineering on a gravity sanitary trunk main between Husky Road and Lilly Avenue, following a unanimous decision by Council at its regular meeting Monday.
In addition Council approved Administration to proceed with the detailed engineering on a gravity sanitary trunk main east of Lilly Avenue to the eastern city boundary if the Quance Development Group commits to cost sharing this work with the City. Further, Administration is authorized to enter into a cost sharing agreement with the Quance Development Group for the engineering work if there is a commitment.
A report to Council explained, "Administration reviewed possible options to provide sanitary sewer to Yorkton New Holland. The first option was a force main to service the properties between Husky road and New Holland plus a portion of the Quance Development lands. This option was ruled out because of its limited ability to service other lands and the need to replace it in the future when such servicing was needed.
"The next option looked at was a gravity service main. The main would be at a depth of five to seven metres and designed to service lands further north, east and south of Yorkton New Holland."
Gord Shaw, manager of the City's Planning & Engineering Department said the Quance Development Group "is quite anxious to partner with us (the City) for this work," adding that will include sharing a portion of the engineering study costs.
Shaw told Council he would hope a further report could be to Council by October, allowing the city to look at tendering some of the work "late this year."
Councillor Chris Wyatt said the focus on development east makes sense.
"It's the best way for the city to develop," he said, adding he was "glad you went with bigger expecting more development."
