The City of Yorkton will no longer make proclamations designating special days or weeks for any events or organizations. Council made the decision recently and implemented the new procedure at the October 21 Council meeting, said Mayor Bob Maloney.
Two groups, including the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #77, regarding the annual Veteran’s Week, and The Yorkton Exhibition Association announcing Harvest Showdown Week, made their presentations and answered questions from Councillors at the meeting. The information was then accepted by Council and became part of the official proceedings of the meeting, technically termed ‘receiving and filing’.
“In both cases the Legion and Exhibition Association were contacted to let them know of Council’s decision to no longer make official proclamations,” said the Mayor. “As has always been the case, organizations are more than welcome to make presentations to Council, it’s just that we are no longer in the business of making proclamations. This is in no way meant as a slight to any organization,” he said.
The new process saves time during council meetings where often there may be three or four proclamation requests at the same meeting. “It makes the process equitable in that all organizations are treated in the same manner,” said the Mayor.
