International Year of Co-operatives Continues its Celebration during National Co-op Week and Credit Union Day

Across the province and around the world, credit unions, caisses populaires and co-operatives are celebrating National Co-op Week, October 14-20. This year is even more special as the United Nations has declared 2012 International Year of Co-operatives. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives are a significant force in the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to economic turbulence, and are successful businesses in their own rite.

The International Year of Co-operatives has been receiving attention throughout the year, particularly during the Saskatchewan Co-operative Week of Volunteering that took place May 28 to June 3. To demonstrate the co-operative principle of concern for community, all branches of Cornerstone Credit Union teamed up to work on volunteer projects. Each branch chose a project that was specific to each community, and resulted in beautification of communities, and funds raised toward local charities and groups. All in all, the motto of IYC, "Co-operative enterprises build a better world," was adequately demonstrated.

Cornerstone Credit Union is continuing their celebration of IYC with International Credit Union Day on October 18th.

2012 also marks the 75th anniversary of Saskatchewan credit unions. On August 2, 1937, the first chartered credit union in Saskatchewan was incorporated. Since then, credit unions have evolved and grown to be an important part of our economy and our communities.

Cornerstone Credit Union is one of 60 Saskatchewan credit unions who together serve 270 communities through 301 service outlets. Saskatchewan credit unions build lives and fulfill dreams by helping members achieve financial well-being and by investing in their communities.
