Parkland College's newest scholarship fundraiser is taking place this weekend in Yorkton. An Evening in Africa, presented by Days Inn Yorkton, will be held Saturday, April 6 in the Parkland Room at the Painted Hand Casino. The event features a live drumming and dancing performance from ONYXSTASIA African Princess Dance Troupe. There will also be two New York-style fashion shows featuring the latest spring looks for men and women from Safire Clothing, K W Men's Wear, Pulse Apparel, and Uptown Casuals.
Money raised at the event will go towards scholarships for current and future students in post-secondary programs at Parkland College. "The scholarship initiative helps to create and encourage opportunities for students to stay in the region and study locally," explained Carol Wiens, chair of the organizing committee.
Contributions to the Parkland College Scholarship Initiative have helped the College maintain the ability to invest in the education and training of residents in the Parkland area. The fund itself has grown from $500 in its first year to over $100,000 in each of the last two academic years. Wiens added, "This is an increased benefit to studying locally in addition to our small class sizes and personalized service."
The show is open to adults over 19 years of age. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and are available at Parkland College campuses in Yorkton and Melville, The Plum Tree in Yorkton and Royal Drug Mart in Melville.
