The community garden has come through its first year. "It was a baptism by fire." Pastor Fred Schneider, chair of the community garden committee said.
The community garden started late. It started mid June. The committee scrambled to get it going. They made use of a garden borrowed for the use of a community garden. They also cleared some land on the Alliance Church property. The committee decided not to use that land. A number of people on the community garden committee grew some garden vegetables on the borrowed garden plot.
Every Thursday, a number of people from the committee would come out to weed and pick. It was a bountiful harvest. The majority of the vegetables went to the Salvation Army. It was told that many of those who received these fresh vegetables in their food hamper were very glad to have them.
The newly ploughed land laid fallow this year. Some old silage has been placed on it. It is prepared for the new year.
They are now trying to recruit some interested gardeners to come on board. They want to help people to enjoy the benefits that come from having fresh, local, accessible, cheap food. They are willing to help.
The community garden committee will be holding an informational event Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Alliance Church. They would like to have anyone or any organization who is interested in the community garden to attend. The committee will show a short video of a community garden in North Battleford. They will explain the advantages and purpose of a community garden. They hope to see a lot of people there.
