Sunrise Regional Health Authority commissioned a master capital plan for the health region and received the plan in October 2010. The top three priority infrastructure needs identified in the plan are in Yorkton, Canora, and Esterhazy.
With the Master Capital Plan complete, the next step is conceptual planning. Conceptual planning does not guarantee provincial approval or funding. A conceptual plan explores the type of facility needed to support the health services that it would house and provides the information needed for the project to be considered within the provincial context.
The following three facilities were identified in the Sunrise Health Region Master Capital Plan as the priority for future infrastructure planning.
Yorkton Regional Health Centre, originally constructed in 1959, is the regional hospital and provides services to all communities in the region. Surgeries, therapies, births, and hemodialysis volumes all increased in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue. Significant upgrades to the facility occurred throughout the years with the most recent being health facility capital repairs and equipment upgrades funded by the government's $1.5 billion Ready for Growth Initiative and the Energy Renewal upgrades.
These upgrades will support regional service delivery until the future of the building is determined.
The affiliate board of St. Anthony's Hospital and the community of Esterhazy conceptual planning is in progress. The hospital was originally constructed in 1966. Major structural repairs occurred in subsequent years; with the most recent being the capital repairs and equipment upgrades funded by the government and the Energy Renewal upgrades. Sunrise Health Region participates on the planning committee for this affiliate capital project.
Conceptual planning will begin in the community of Canora. The Canora Hospital was built in 1968 and the Canora Gateway Lodge in 1972. These facilities also had recent capital repairs and equipment upgrades funded by the government and Energy Renewal upgrades which will support services at these locations until the buildings are replaced. An integrated facility is envisioned for Canora.
"Planning for the future and for our priority infrastructure needs is exciting," says Suann Laurent, Chief Executive Officer (Interim) for Sunrise Health Region. "I look forward to the dialogue with communities, physicians and our employees during the conceptual planning phase."
Commitment of communities to fund conceptual planning is an essential element. Discussions have been initiated by the health region with municipal governments and local fundraising groups.
