Yorktonites will be able to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial with music this weekend.
The Anne Portnuff Theatre at Yorkton Regional High School will be hosting a fall concert on Nov. 4. Over 200 performers and musicians will be playing a vast selection of Canadian songs to honour the country’s 150th birthday.
Larry Pearen, who will be conducting bands for a majority of the songs, is one of the key organizers of the event.
“We do fall concerts, but never this big,” he said.
The show will include Native dancers and drum groups.
“This [concert] is unique because it involves all these dancers,” Pearen said.
The event will include renditions of “Hockey Night in Canada,” “Un Canadien Errant,” “Prairie Greyhounds,” and more. Some songs will be accompanied with Native and Ukrainian dance-styles.
“It’s going to be a great concert,” Pearen said. “There’ll be pageantry.
“It’s exciting.”
The concert will donate its proceeds to the Anne Portnuff Theatre Revitalization Project.
“We’ve been trying to raise money for new seats [for the theatre],” Pearen said.
Pearen hopes the concert brings people from all backgrounds together to appreciate their home country.
“We’re lucky to be here,” he said.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. Adult tickets cost $10. Students get in for free.
