Sentencing

Two perpetrators of a crime spree across Yorkton and area from August to November of 2015 have been sentenced. MacKenzie Johnson and Samuel Johnson both received conditional sentences for their part in the acts.

Prosecutor Daryl Bode described the pair as going “hog wild,” breaking in and committing robberies in multiple businesses worth thousands of dollars. MacKenzie was charged for his part in fifteen break and enters while Samuel was charged in  twenty counts.

In a joint submission, both Johnsons received a six month conditional sentence, followed by 18 months of probation. Both were issued a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. during their conditional sentence and between 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. during the probation period. They were also ordered to stay away from the businesses and residences involved in the crime spree, the other perpetrators in the acts, and to enroll in addictions treatment.

MacKenzie Johnson was ordered to pay $2,738.65 in restitution to the victims, beginning with $400 during the conditional sentence and followed by monthly payments starting in the probation period.

Samuel Johnson, who was charged in a larger number of incidents in the spree, has to pay restitution of $5,975.99, with $400 during his conditional sentence and with monthly payments during his probation period.

Judge Patrick Koskie reminded the two men that he would have “no hesitation” putting them in prison for “a long period of time” if they violated the conditions of the sentence, but that their commitment to pay restitution for their crimes has gone a long way towards his accepting the joint submission. He recommended major life changes for both men.
