If you are thinking about a career in aviation then achieving a commercial pilot licence might be a perfect fit.

Those considering such a career path had the opportunity to learn more about the option at an information session hosted by Leading Edge Aviation Saturday at the Yorkton Regional Airport.

The session provided details regarding the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Commercial Pilot Diploma Program.

The program is a partnership between the Saskatchewan Aviation Council, which represents the aviation industry and includes the flying schools, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
Don Ingham with Leading Edge said they are involved in the process because they can provide the hands-on hours in an airplane required by the course.

Ingham added that a private pilot license is required to start the course, and they provide that training as well.

The course also requires a year, (two semesters), at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic explained Randall Muzyka, program head with the Commercial Pilot Program.

Typically a person can get their diploma in a couple of years, although students have up to three-years to complete.

The flight training is a matter of achieving established standards, and hours in an airplane, explained Ingham, adding “a training regime has to be followed.”

Muzyka said the current need for pilots makes the career a good one to explore.

It’s a situation where many pilots currently flying commercially are reaching the age to retire, he said.

“I think the industry has known of the situation for quite a while,” he said, in terms of pilot shortages emerging due to retirements.

And then there are simply more pilots needed.

“The growth in the industry is part of that too,” said Muzyka. “… The aviation opportunities are unprecedented.”
