At its October meeting, the Board of Education of the Good Spirit School Division approved its Five Year Proposed Construction Plan for submittal to the Ministry of Education.
The plan outlines seven construction projects identified as priorities for the division over the next five years. All requests are subject to approval by the government based on available funding and other considerations.
The projects, in descending order of priority, are as follows.
1. Yorkton Regional High School: Several "critical components of this building must be addressed for the long term viability of this facility." The school requires building code upgrades, mechanical upgrades, courtyard drainage, window replacement, and asbestos abatement.
2. Langenburg High School: six million dollars in renovations are necessary over the next five years to keep the building operational. Construction of a new school is recommended instead.
3. Canora Junior Elementary School: Portable classrooms are needed to address overcrowding issues. The school is at 154 percent capacity.
4. Yorkdale Central School: The existing portable classrooms are due for replacement. An additional two portable classrooms are also required.
5. Preeceville School: The school's gymnasium is in poor condition and lacking amenities such as a stage. A new facility should be built, possibly in partnership with the community.
6. Norquay School: Renovations should be completed in the library, home economics room, fine arts room, and gymnasium. Fire sprinklers should be installed in the unrenovated portion of the school.
7. Sturgis Composite High School: This school should be amalgamated with Sturgis Elementary School, provided the "consent of the community" can be obtained.
