Correctional Services Act

Correctional services in Saskatchewan will be strengthened through the proclamation of The Correctional Services Act, 2012.

"This legislation will improve the security in our provincial correctional centres, putting the safety of Saskatchewan communities first," Minister responsible for Corrections and Policing Christine Tell said. "The new principles and provisions in the Act ensure that correctional services are administered in a manner that enhances public safety, promotes the fair treatment of offenders and improves offender and staff accountability."

The purpose of the Act is to modernize Saskatchewan's correctional system by complying with legal precedence across jurisdictions, implementing best correctional practices and providing for technological advancements in security innovations that will keep Saskatchewan safe.

This new Act is a direct result of the government's response to the 2009 investigation and external report following the escape of six inmates from the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre on August 24, 2008. The Road Ahead: Towards a Safer Correctional System, provided 23 recommendations, including a review of the ministry's legislation and regulations.
